"Val (her sister-in-law) held one, Jim (her brother-in-law) held another and I held the baby. Caleb Boggs let it be known that he buys a good percentage of his wife's clothes. "Even bikinis and lots of slacks. I know her size better than she does. I like to see her wear tans and browns in the winter, greens and blues when the weather is warm." ***(The Biden car was demolished, police said. The windshield was smashed out, the door behind the driver's door pushed into the back seat and the left rear wheel ripped out.)*** - "I can laugh at it now," Neilia said. "The thing that struck me most about a campaign was the lack of glamor. No conveniences at all. Why, there never was any place or time to change. We'd go from an informal function to something formal and many times I'd just change in the car and tell Hunt (their 3-year-old son) not to look." ***(Crushed in the back of the car was a small Christmas tree.)*** - "The funniest thing," Joe recalled, "was the day my father opened the glove compartment and found a pair of bikini panties. He didn't know about all the changing that went on in the car." ***(The truck continued about 20 feet beyond where the Biden car came to rest and turned over on its right side, police said.)*** - "There were only two people made important decisions in the campaign," Biden said. "Myself and Neilia. She was the brains. And she also prevented me from blowing my top when I got angry late in the going." ***(Mrs. Biden originally had planned to join her husband in Washington that night. She instead decided to make the trip the next day, when a settlement was to be made on a house they were purchasing there.)*** - "I'm apprehensive about one thing," the new senator's wife admitted. "When Joe comes home and is too busy to tell me what's going on, I'm sure it'll hurt my feelings and I'll really feel left out. But we'll get through the way we've always gotten through doing what you want to do." ***(The accident occurred six weeks after Biden became the second youngest man every elected to the Senate by popular vote and five weeks before he is to be sworn into office.)*** - "I'm really excited I still can't believe it," Biden said of his major upset victory. "Sounds preposterous, me a member of the Senate. I've thought of this since I was 9 years old. It's overwhelming. My mom and dad are just as elated. Dad called me this morning and asked to speak to Senator Biden. They're both so proud." ***(Biden rushed to Wilmington in a rented plane. Witnesses said he entered the hospital with his sitter and two men. He looked straight ahead.)*** - Biden said Neilia finally agreed to his running for the Senate at 2 o'clock one morning. "She always wanted me to be a judge. She thought a rough campaign would hurt my career, But deeper than that, I believe, was the money problem. She thinks borrowing is wicked. I was making $15,000 a year in law and couldn't finance a campaign myself." ***(A spokesman said Biden still was under sedation but had begun taking light nourishment.)*** - "She came around to the thought that there always would be pressure on me to run for something," Biden continued. "What she said was 'I suppose you'll have to try it once, win I or lose, or you'll never be happy with yourself.'" ***(A private funeral service for the immediate family was held. Mrs. Biden and Amy were buried at All Saints Cemetery.)*** ## 12-22-1972 ### Sen Church's Special Aide To Be Biden's Top Aide  A. Wesley Barthelmes Jr., a special assistant to U.S. Sen. Frank Church, D-Idaho, will become top Washington aide to U.S. Joseph R. Biden Jr. Barthelmes, 47, will be Biden's administrative assistant and will handle his national press relations. His salary will be about $33,000 a year. The appointment, which had been rumored for the last few weeks, was confirmed when Barthelmes acted as press spokesman for Biden following Monday's traffic accident in which Biden's wife Neilia and baby. daughter were killed. Barthelmes will remain on Church's staff until Jan. 3. During the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy's, presidential campaign, Barthelmes was his press secretary. Although he had no official capacity in Biden's campaign machinery, Barthelmes was an unpaid consultant-adviser to Biden in his successful bid to unseat U.S. Sen. J. Caleb Boggs. Barthelmes has a reputation as being one of the top staff aides on Capitol Hill. Sources in Washington said his decision to switch to Biden is considered a major coup for the nation's youngest senator. Biden's new aide lives in Bethesda, Md. He is married and has four children. ## 12-22-1972 ### Wife Sensed Tragedy, 650 Told By Biden at Memorial Service Author: Sal Streett  "Things were just too good something was bound to happen," said U.S. Joseph R. Biden Jr. last night. The young senator-to-be, who lost his wife and 13-month-old daughter Monday afternoon in a truck-car accident, last night appeared unexpectedly at memorial services for the public at St. Mary Magdelen Catholic Church. After the service, attended by about 650, Biden spoke candidly in a startling and reflective way about his "two girls" his wife, Neilia Hunter Biden, 30 and his young daughter, Naomi Christina, or Amy as she was called. "The night before she (his wife) died, she was writing Christmas cards. We were both in the living room in front of the fire, and I was sitting in my lounge chair, a pompous young senator thinking about the big things I was going to do in Washington," Biden said. His wife, interrupting his pensive mood, said, "What's going to happen, Joey? things are too good." "We had known something was going to happen," he said. "We decided not to have a fourth child because of a fear that something would happen to it." "We had three beautiful children, now I have two," he said. Biden's two sons, Joseph R. Ill, 4, and Robert Hunter, 3, survived the accident and both are in satisfactory condition in the Delaware Division. Standing before the altar of the huge and beautiful sanctuary, Biden, a Catholic, faced a large audience, which ranged from Sherman W. Tribbitt and other notables to many who were just unknown friends and admirers of the young Biden family. "Please don't be sad, I'm pretty proud of her." He turned to one of the priests and said, "We Bidens never had a Scotch Presbyterian in our family." The audience appeared to be fortified by Biden's strength and composure. It was somber, but not sad. "She had a principle she treated everyone the same and that worked both ways," he said. "Those who were poor, black, minority, affluent socially esteemed, she made no distinction among them." "I was probably one of those phony liberals the kind that go out of their way to be nice to a minority, and she made me realize I was making a distinction," he said. "But in dealing with minorities, she made no gestures she made no distinctions." "I'm going to be that way, I'm going to try to follow her example," he said. Biden borrowed the words from John Milton to express the fear he had had since his wedding day eight years ago: "I waked, she fled and Day brought back my night." He kept his composure throughout his speech until, at the end, he said fervently, "Thank you all very much for coming." Joe Biden's first wife and daughter were both killed when their family car was broadsided by a truck at an intersection in Delaware in 1972. Beau and Hunter were very badly injured. The truck driver, Curtis Dunn, was never charged in the crash. Although there was no indication that it was the case, for years Joe Biden told audiences and reporters that the man who hit them was drunk. Dunn died in 1999, and since then, his surviving family endured widespread rumors and reports that he had been drinking just before the collision. Rumors that were spurned by Biden's repeated insistence that he had "drank his lunch" before the crash, among other things. He only stopped doing so when Dunn's family begged him to stop. # The Crash in 1972… and the Lies Following It is tragic what happened to Neilia Biden and the Biden children, but all indications on the scene suggest she did not see the tractor trailer Dunn was driving and pulled out in front of him. The 150-ft long tire marks on the road suggest he tried his very best to stop. Delaware Judge Jerome Herlihy, who investigated the crash, [supported](https://web.archive.org/web/20210609002603/https://www.cbsnews.com/news/driver-in-biden-crash-wanted-name-cleared/) the claim, telling CBS News, "There was no indication that the truck driver had been drinking." That didn't stop Joe Biden from saying otherwise, however. He told the lie once in a [speech](https://web.archive.org/web/20201028105537/http://web.archive.org/web/20090103174645/http:/biden.senate.gov/press/speeches/speech/?id=edf6f852-c9e3-4a9d-a6ef-f67f3fec07cd) in September 2001 in an effort to connect with those who lost loved ones on 9/11. > To the loved ones of the victims, there is nothing really we can say to erase this tragedy. And, those of you who think it's presumptuous of me to say that… in a different circumstance, I got one of those phone calls. I got one of those phone calls like Davis Sezna got. I got a phone call saying, "Your wife's dead; your daughter's dead." And I've only said that three times in public before. But, I say it here because it's so important for you to understand. I got one of those phone calls. It was an errant driver who stopped to drink instead of drive and hit a tractor-trailer, hit my children and my wife and killed them. It wasn't an airplane, but it was a phone call." It wouldn't be until 2008 in which a Biden spokesperson would say that then-Senator Biden "fully accepts the Dunn family's word that these rumors were false." The horrific part of that being he never issued a more public statement than that, and the wording is very careful: Biden accepts the family's word against rumors… when he was the one who started the rumors. Worse still, there was plenty of evidence the entire time that the crash was Neilia's fault. She'd [missed](https://web.archive.org/web/20210111000804/https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/12871565/joe-biden-drunk-crash-neilia-trump-delaware/) the stop sign and pulled out of Curtis Dunn, who "flipped his own truck trying to avoid the oncoming car and inadvertently almost killed himself."  Biden, with his [history of lying](https://somebitchtoldme.com/hunter-becomes-the-hunted/) about his time at college, and his history of plagiarizing speeches, can add this to the exceedingly long list of things he has lied about repeatedly to gain political leverage: the death of his wife and child. ## Neilia Biden According to Joe Biden In a 1974 [profile](https://archive.vn/11FUx#selection-1049.381-1049.530) of Joe Biden, he talks of his late wife rather vividly: > Neilia was my very best friend, my greatest ally, my sensuous lover. The longer we lived together the more we enjoyed everything from sex to sports." He continues: > Let me show you my favorite picture of her," he says, holding up a snapshot of Neilia in a bikini. "She had the best body of any woman I ever saw. She looks better than a Playboy bunny, doesn't she? Excuse me, ***what***???? Biden also liked to brag about the fact that Neilia was a Republican when they met: > My beautiful millionaire wife was a conservative Republican before she met me. But she changed her registration."  He goes on to describe how he would come home tired and still be able to satisfy her in bed. And to finish the interview off, Biden, who "defines politics as power," tells the journalist interviewing him that politicians are capable of stripping Americans of their First Amendment rights. > Whether you like it or not, young lady," he says, leaning over his desk to shake a finger at me, "us cruddy politicians can take away that First Amendment of yours if we want to." ## In Closing Joe Biden has a repeated history of lying to get what he wants and deflecting when called out on it. Despite having to remove himself from numerous political races in the past when the many skeletons in his closet surfaced, he somehow managed to find himself in the position of president of the United States by continuing to run again and again. Biden is the type of man who wants to win, regardless of how he accomplishes his victories.
