# Unit 731
[Unit 731](https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Unit_731#Experiments_on_staff_members) was a covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit of the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II. It was established in 1936 and operated primarily in Harbin, China. The unit conducted inhumane experiments on humans, often Chinese and Korean civilians and prisoners of war, in an effort to develop biological weapons and gain insights into the effects of various diseases and chemicals on the human body.
The experiments often involved vivisection without anesthesia, and the subjects were often deliberately infected with diseases such as anthrax, cholera, and syphilis. The unit's activities were kept secret after the war, and many of its members were granted immunity in exchange for their research data.
