Harry Truman and John Kennedy, died Sunday. He was 84. The Baltimore Democrat died of cardiac arrest while in Mercy Hospital's coronary intensive care unit said Chris Zang, a hospital spokesman. D'Alesandro, who also served as a city councilman and five-term congressman, had suffered an apparent heart attack Aug. 7 while vacationing with his wife, Nancy. As mayor from 1947 to 1959, D'Alesandro presided over a period of vast physical improvements to Baltimore. An airport was opened outside the city during his tenure, and the Baltimore Orioles returned to the major leagues. In 1958, he won voter approval for the financing of the Charles Center urban renewal project, launching the rejuvenation that would remake much of the heart of Baltimore. Baltimore Mayor Clarence "Du" Burns, a black, recalled that D'Alesandro's school construction projects provided new facilities for many of the city's blacks who had been relegated to second-class buildings. Under D'Alesandro, 87 new schools were built. As a public figure. D'Alesandro never hid his emotions. When he was happy, his face left no doubt of it; when sad, he could weep unabashedly. In every one of his 23 campaigns for nomination or election he had to buck organized opposition. Except for the last two, he thrived on it and emerged the winner. His home was the Little Italy section of Baltimore; he lived just a block from his birthplace. Asked why he had remained in the modest rowhouse community of his childhood, the elder D'Alesandro replied, • 'I'm a paisano. These are my people and this is where I belong."
