The program involved the use of drugs, hypnosis, and other forms of psychological manipulation to explore methods for controlling human behavior. The main goal of MKUltra was to develop techniques for extracting information from individuals against their will, and to create "Manchurian Candidates" - individuals who could be programmed to carry out specific tasks or missions without their knowledge or consent. The program involved the testing of various substances and methods on unwitting human subjects, including both civilians and military personnel. MKUltra was brought to an end due to a combination of factors, including a lack of conclusive results, public scrutiny, and legal challenges. In the early 1970s, several lawsuits were filed against the CIA by individuals who claimed they had been subjected to MKUltra experiments without their knowledge or consent. These lawsuits, combined with growing public concern about the program, prompted the CIA to begin destroying many of the MKUltra records in an effort to cover up the extent of their activities. In 1973, CIA Director Richard Helms ordered the destruction of most of the remaining MKUltra records, in an effort to prevent them from falling into the hands of Congress or the public. However, some documents were not destroyed and were later used as evidence in lawsuits against the CIA. In 1975, the Senate Church Committee, established to investigate abuses by US intelligence agencies, began looking into MKUltra. The committee's investigation revealed the extent of the CIA's involvement in the program and led to the declassification of many previously secret documents. > [!info|no-icon flex bg-c-gray]- MKUltra Press Guidance
**Click to Expand ➜** > \- **[Archived URL](https://dn790000.ca.archive.org/0/items/MKULTRAPressGuidance/MKULTRA%20press%20guidance.pdf)** > >

Related: 1. Project ARTICHOKE: Conducted by the CIA during the 1950s, Project ARTICHOKE aimed to study the use of hypnosis, drugs, and other forms of mind control to extract information from individuals against their will. The program was eventually folded into MKUltra. 2. Project BLUEBIRD: Initiated in 1950, Project BLUEBIRD was the precursor to MKUltra and focused on researching methods to control human behavior, including the use of hypnosis, drugs, and other forms of psychological manipulation. 3. Operation Paperclip: This was a secret US program that brought Nazi scientists to the United States after World War II. Many of these scientists had been involved in human experimentation and other unethical research during the war, and their expertise was considered valuable for the US military and intelligence community. 4. The Human Radiation Experiments: Conducted between 1944 and 1974, these secretive experiments involved exposing human subjects to radiation without their knowledge or consent. The purpose was to study the effects of radiation on the human body and to develop better ways to protect military personnel and civilians from the dangers of nuclear warfare. 5. The Tuskegee Syphilis Study: Conducted by the US Public Health Service between 1932 and 1972, this infamous study involved the deliberate withholding of treatment from African-American men with syphilis to observe the natural progression of the disease. The study continued even after penicillin became widely available as a cure for syphilis, causing unnecessary suffering and death among the subjects. %%Footer Starts Here%% ---

--- ## Tags ### Linked Pages & Footnotes
