I'll be on Simpcast on January 21st. ## Segments ### Pep Talk "Tunnel's End" was my way of more succinctly referencing the expression, "a light at the end of the tunnel." ![center](https://i.postimg.cc/pd6T1ttt/JE.png) > "a light at the end of the tunnel," Merriam-Webster. [Accessed 1/9/2024](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/a%20light%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20tunnel). And while, yes, this is also my way of referencing last night's drama surrounding the secret tunnels discovered at the Chabad-Lubavitch Headquarters in Brooklyn (which we will eventually talk about), it's also something that I've wanted to express to you in a much broader sense. Although I've tried previously, I'm not sure how well I did, and I decided tonight was a good night to try again to put it into words. I'm taking the time to say all this because it means something to me that you understand how big small moments of discovery are, and why I have an unflinching optimism about the future. So, if you'll indulge me, let's get a little philosophical for a moment. #### The Observer's Paradox ![center](https://i.postimg.cc/yx8tkWNM/JE.png) Over the last few years, I've made many references to the **Observer's Paradox**. It's a fascinating little thought experiment that spans physics, quantum mechanics, and the social sciences. In both physics and quantum mechanics, the **Observer's Paradox** relates to the idea that the act of observation alone influences the outcome of an experiment, **particularly at the quantum level**. - The quantum level gets down into atomic and subatomic particles, which often disregards the general laws of classical mechanics, such as motion, gravity, and energy conservation. - Instead, two things can be true at once (**wave-particle duality**), things can exist in multiple states of being until being measured or observed (**superposition**), particles become entangled to the point where the state of one will always directly affect the state of the other (**entanglement**), and not everything can be known at the same time (**uncertainty principle**). So when an observation alone is enough to forever alter something at a quantum level, it is not always going to be immediately and obviously visible at a classical level, but that does not stop its outcome from being changed forever. To me, with relevance to our never-ending quest to try to make sense of the world, these quantum changes are crucial. They occur within our own minds as we take in new information and put more thoughts and ideas together. And once we "see" it, we can't unsee it. There is no going back to how things were before, even if it's only slightly different. We are being constantly changed by the world around us, simply by **actively** observing it. The world around us changes by having been observed. These are good things, and I am encouraged by that. #### The Tunnel's End ![wmed|center](https://i.postimg.cc/MHRhRgww/JE.png) To tie this in with tonight's analogy, the "tunnel's end," we can connect the scientific concepts relating to the Observer's Paradox to the more metaphorical expression of a positive outcome after a period of darkness and uncertainty. It is no secret that the last four or so years in particular have been some of the most spiritually and psychologically challenging times in many of our lives. They have been for me, at least. But I do see the light at the end of the tunnel for so many things that have been a constant thorn and frequent foil to reaching that destination. And simply by seeing that end in sight, it changes everything else around it. No, there are no guaranteed victories in life or in any of its many side quests, but there is a path forward. And it starts by observation and ends with internal and external reflections of that observation. I, for one, am so far removed from the person I was even three years ago, in so many good ways. It didn't happen overnight, but in a series of small, individual-imperceptible changes. I know I am not alone. How can the people who harnessed the apparatuses of control over our lives and minds possibly get them back, when we are on a daily basis rejecting their dialectic entirely? And we seek out and discuss these experiences with others who have done the exact same? How can they ever dream of maintaining control when all it takes is a single look at the right time to undo it all? Once you see it, you can't unsee it. And it cannot be unseen. That is why we will win out in the end. I believe this with all my heart. ### The Brooklyn Tunnels [What Are The 'Chabad Synagogue Tunnels' All About?
