# Greetings & Announcements

1. This is just because I find it funny, but it turns out the "strange wind" I heard on Tuesday while standing outside barefoot watching that storm roll in was actually a tornado. Also, TIL there is such thing as an EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

The Enhanced Fujita Scale has been in use since February 1, 2007, and is a set of wind estimates (not measurements) based on damage.
Link to the National Weather Service site if you're interested: <https://www.weather.gov/oun/efscale>

So anyway, the long story short is, you might know what a tornado is supposed to sound like, you might even sit there and think, "Hmm this wind sure is strong and sounds like a jet engine," but unless the tornado siren is going off you might just be dumb enough to not recognize you're recognizing something.

# Hanlon & Occam's Razors
## Occam's Razor

In philosophy, Occam's razor (also spelled Ockham's razor or Ocham's razor; Latin: novacula Occami) is the problem-solving principle that recommends searching for explanations constructed with the smallest possible set of elements. It is also known as the principle of parsimony or the law of parsimony (Latin: lex parsimoniae). Attributed to William of Ockham, a 14th-century English philosopher and theologian, it is frequently cited as Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem, which translates as "Entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity", although Occam never used these exact words. Popularly, the principle is sometimes inaccurately paraphrased as "The simplest explanation is usually the best one."This philosophical razor advocates that when presented with competing hypotheses about the same prediction, one should prefer the one that requires the fewest assumptions and that this is not meant to be a way of choosing between hypotheses that make different predictions. Similarly, in science, Occam's razor is used as an abductive heuristic in the development of theoretical models rather than as a rigorous arbiter between candidate models.[^1]
## Hanlon's Razor

Hanlon's razor is an adage or rule of thumb that states, "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." Known in several other forms, it is a philosophical razor that suggests a way of eliminating unlikely explanations for human behavior. It is probably named after Robert J. Hanlon, who submitted the statement to Murphy's Law Book Two (1980). Similar statements have been recorded since at least the 18th century.[^2]
## We Need A New Razor
For all the talking we do about the corrupt and duplicitous nature of governments, individuals in politics/business, and a wide variety of other things, you often still see people reducing an entire summary of the goings-on to: **How stupid can they be?**
And I think, given the state of the world and the repeated instances in which we've seen just how corrupt and willfully malicious people can be, we need a new term that is opposite of Hanlon's Law.
There is one… sort of… but it doesn't have a great name and not enough people know about it. It is adapted from the three laws of science fiction writing, coined by Sir Arthur C. Clarke. The laws are:
1. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
That third law has inspired many snowclones over time. A snowclone is a phrase that is recognizable within a myriad of different formats.
Examples:
- "X is the new Y"
- "The mother of all X"
- "Have X, will travel"
Two lesser-known but effective snowclones of Clarke's third law are:
Clark's Law, which originates from a 1994 [email chain](https://archive.is/9eZQo) complaining about the government.
- Any sufficiently advanced cluelessness is indistinguishable from malice.

Grey's Law, as described in a 2015 book by Philip Gooden.
- Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice.

**Long Story Short:** We need to stop arguing that malicious people are simply just stupid, and I propose we come up with a new adage and name for it and popularize that line of thinking. What do you say?
Speaking of maliciously stupid people…
# IRS Whistleblower Testimony
While I didn't do an "official" episode of Big Dig Energy last night, if you missed it, we got together and watched the first few hours of the IRS whistleblower testimony, and it was a good time… aside from the mind-numbing discourse coming from the politicians.

Here's the replay:

## Full IRS Whistleblower Testimony Video
**Link:** <https://www.c-span.org/video/?529320-1/irs-whistleblowers-testify-hunter-biden-investigation>
Date Originally Aired: [[07-19-2023]]
**Description:** Two IRS whistleblowers, special agent Joseph Ziegler and his supervisor Gary Shapley, testified on the ongoing investigation into the Biden family before the House Oversight Committee. The hearing focused on President Biden's son, Hunter Biden, with the witnesses alleging he committed tax felonies at various times between 2014-19. Under an agreement made with the Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney for Delaware David Weiss, Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of failing to pay on time more than $200,000 in his 2017–18 taxes. However, the witnesses alleged that Attorney Weiss was not given proper authority and that the Justice Department obstructed the investigation in Mr. Biden's favor. Democrats dismissed these as well as other accusations made by Republican members, such as the Biden family engaging in influence peddling with foreign nations, disagreeing with the witnesses' interpretations of events and citing a lack of evidence from Republicans.

## Chuck Grassley Releases FBI Record
Today, Iowa senator Chuck Grassley released an unclassified FD-1023, "alleging then VP Biden engaged in a criminal bribery scheme."
Link: <http://archive.today/yl5iR>

> **WASHINGTON** – Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) today released an unclassified FBI-generated record describing an alleged criminal scheme involving then-Vice President Joe Biden and a Ukrainian business executive. Grassley acquired the record, an FD-1023, via legally protected disclosures by Justice Department whistleblowers.
>
> "For the better part of a year, I've been pushing the Justice Department and FBI to provide details on its handling of very significant allegations from a trusted FBI informant implicating then-Vice President Biden in a criminal bribery scheme. While the FBI sought to obfuscate and redact, the American people can now read this document for themselves, without the filter of politicians or bureaucrats, thanks to brave and heroic whistleblowers. What did the Justice Department and FBI do with the detailed information in the document? And why have they tried to conceal it from Congress and the American people for so long? The Justice Department and FBI have failed to come clean, but Chairman Comer and I intend to find out," **Grassley said**.
>
> "The FBI's Biden Bribery Record tracks closely with the evidence uncovered by the Oversight Committee's Biden family influence peddling investigation. In the FBI's record, the Burisma executive claims that he didn't pay the 'big guy' directly but that he used several bank accounts to conceal the money. That sounds an awful lot like how the Bidens conduct business: using multiple bank accounts to hide the source and total amount of the money," **House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer said.** "At our hearing with IRS whistleblowers, they testified that they had never seen or heard of this record during the Biden criminal investigation, despite having potentially corroborating evidence. Given the misconduct and politicization at the Department of Justice, the American people must be able to read this record for themselves. I thank Senator Grassley for providing much needed transparency to the American people. We must hold the Department of Justice accountable for seeking to bury this record to protect the Bidens."
>
> Grassley first disclosed the FBI's possession of [significant and voluminous evidence](https://archive.is/o/yl5iR/https://www.grassley.senate.gov/news/news-releases/fbi-possesses-significant-impactful-voluminous-evidence-of-potential-criminality-in-biden-family-business-arrangements) of potential criminality involving the Biden family last year. He has since worked to unearth the FBI record, eventually [partnering with Comer](https://archive.is/o/yl5iR/https://www.grassley.senate.gov/news/news-releases/grassley-comer-demand-fbi-record-alleging-criminal-scheme-involving-then-vp-biden) on a subpoena to compel its public disclosure. After delays, the FBI provided a highly redacted version of the document to select members of the House of Representatives, but it remained shielded from the public and omitted key details, including [references to recordings](https://archive.is/o/yl5iR/https://www.grassley.senate.gov/news/remarks/grassley-fbi-redacted-references-to-recordings-in-biden-allegation-shared-with-congress). Following the FBI's failure to fully comply with the congressional subpoena, Grassley received the legally protected disclosure with limited redactions to protect a trusted FBI source, handling agents, department whistleblowers and identifiers related to other ongoing investigations.

> **'Poluchili'**
>
> According to the FBI's confidential human source, executives for Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company, brought Hunter Biden on the board to "protect us through his dad, from all kinds of problems." At the time, Burisma was seeking to do business in the United States, but was facing a corruption investigation in Ukraine, led by then-Ukraine Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin. Regarding that investigation's impact on its ambitions in North America, Burisma CEO Mykola Zlochevsky reportedly said, "Don't worry Hunter will take care of all of those issues through his dad." Zlochevsky reportedly stated that he had to pay $5 million to Hunter Biden and $5 million to Joe Biden, an arrangement he described as 'poluchili,' which is Russian crime slang for being "forced or coerced to pay," according to the document.
>
> **"Back-up"**
>
> Zlochevsky claimed to have many text messages and recordings that show that he was coerced into paying the Bidens to ensure Shokin was fired. Specifically, he claimed to have two recordings with Joe Biden and 15 recordings with Hunter Biden. Zlochevsky also retained two documents, presumably financial records, as evidence of the arrangement, but said he didn't send any funds directly to the "Big Guy," a term understood to be a reference to Joe Biden. References to the "Big Guy" surfaced in communications involving other Biden family business arrangements independent of the Burisma arrangement. Zlochevsky claimed it would take investigators 10 years to uncover the illicit payments to the Bidens, according to the document.

### What is an FD-1023?
Link: https://socxfbi.org/SFSA/SFSA/Featured-Articles/Message-from-the-FBI-on-the-FD-1023-Request-from-Congress.aspx
"The FD-1023 is the form our special agents use to record raw, unverified reporting from confidential human sources (CHSs). FD-1023s merely document that information; they do not reflect the conclusions of investigators based on a fuller context or understanding. Recording this information does not validate it, establish its credibility, or weigh it against other information known or developed by the FBI in our investigations."

# Teens & ADHD Social Contagion
Link: <https://ground.news/article/teens-are-using-social-media-to-diagnose-themselves-with-adhd-autism-and-more-parents-are-alarmed_b88ef3>
Overview:
- Teenagers are using social media platforms like TikTok and [Instagram](https://ground.news/interest/instagram_10ce20) to self-diagnose themselves with mental health conditions, which has alarmed parents, therapists, and school counselors. They follow creators who discuss their own mental health conditions and come across posts with symptoms checklists to determine if they meet the criteria for a diagnosis.
- This trend of self-diagnosing is concerning because it can lead to mislabeling, exacerbate teens' behaviors, make them feel isolated, and hinder them from getting the appropriate help they need.
- While some adults credit social media for helping them identify and understand their own mental health struggles, experts warn that teenagers may lack the ability to objectively interpret the information they find online and should seek professional guidance.
